FurBowl Controversy
Michael Stanton – FSPN Correspondent
With the FurBowl a few days away, there should be excitement from fans and players alike; especially since the dawn of the new football league. But it seems that a few players are not really excited about the game between the Fargo Axemen and the Downriver Waves. In fact, some of the people are actually boycotting the game. The question is why are they holding out on such a big game from a big season? Some of the answers lie within the season and what happened between a couple of players.
Kova Lewdko, a former Downriver wide receiver now turned Free Agent, was picked up by the team late in the draft; and from what the stats say about him, he didn't perform too well throughout the whole season and was eventually dropped at the end of the regular season. Lewdko felt he was robbed of being in the postseason.
“Don't know what hurts more: getting cut before playoffs; or possibly having my championship hopes dashed once again.”
He had to deal with the postseason by sitting at his home and watching his former team succeed all the way to the FurBowl.
“Sitting at home bites. What makes it sting just a little more is seeing my old team advance without me AND my replacement gets MVP?”
Eventually, when the day of the FurBowl approaches, Kova made a public decision that started a small movement.
“I know at least 5 people who aren't attending tonight's game and have since gave it up their tickets.”
“@ufurryfootball if any miss out on watching this "great game", it's out of my hands #Imnotsorry.”
“@ladykrowe I will reiterate for those who neglected to follow along. Myself and my family who came from Florida to watch me play.”
He then turned his attention to someone else; Fargo rookie QB Christina Carson.
“@ladykrowe I personally am not wasting my time or attention on a fox who feels she is better than everyone in the UFFL and watch her gloat.”
“@ladykrowe As much as I want my former team to win, I can't get into this match up and I feel it best to abstain and boycott the festivities.”
With these anouncements made on Twitter, others started to chime in and takes sides, according to Las Vegas Bandit's Kelley Rowe.
“Seems like the FurBowl debate is picking up. Some are boycotting while others are saying saying that they deserve it.”
“(Las Vegas Bandits teammates) Stephen Harris, Renato Hanna, and Alex Smith are not watching because they felt the (Head Coach) at Downriver treated you bad when they dropped you.”
“And from my agent; Isaac Sierra, Everett Simms and Virginia Pratt aren't watching because they felt Christina went the prima-donna route.”
I managed to talk to some other players in the UFFL and their replies are as mixed as everyone else in the league.
California Dons RB Darren Stephens – This game is all about pushing yourself to be great. If they feel that you aren't doing your best, then they will drop you for someone that will do it. If Kova is weak at this game, then he will be a free agent throughout his career. You can't just boycott the big game because you didn't do well and you got dropped.
Easton Bald Eagles DL Jarrett Kennedy – Not everyone becomes a superstar in this sport or any other sport. I feel for the guy but sometimes you're just good as being average than being on top of the world. But overall, this is one of the greatest games out here.
Baltimore Ponies Kicker Virginia Pratt – Being a female in a sport like this is rough. But we are here and we are strong. However, there's no need to act all like a princess and demanding on being on the field like 'Let us play or we will quit!'. We just need to prove we are as strong as the guys by our work ethics. I'll be sure to change the channel whenever she gets on the field.
Ponies LB Maqui Jelani - Kova needs to cool down and take a deep breath. The teams and players that made it earned their spots unlike him; which is possibly why they released him. He just need to not say anything and work a little harder.
With the FurBowl coming up, the atmosphere is very strong. We can only wait till the game day to see if any of this happens.
