I LOVE topics like this...!
The neat thing is that I first had the idea for the United Furry Football League back in 2010 or 2011 around the time that the United Football League was still playing. (If you have never heard of that, there was actually a rival pro football league for 3 years in the US, look it up!) I've always loved the idea of alternative pro football, so that really peaked my interest in creating a fictional league. I ended up creating a league which grew to 40 teams (not including defunct franchises). I created uniforms for 28 of the teams, wrote a league history, and simmed several seasons using spreadsheets and random numbers. It was all actually a lot of fun.
Anyways, I got busy for a while and put it to the side until a chance happening across the FLB got me re-interested in the whole idea. This time though I wanted to do something that would involve the furry community as a whole, not just myself, and since there wasn't any existing football league at the time I started the UFFL. As fate would have it, really early on IAMW came across the UFFL, having had a similar idea of his own, we decided to team up and it's been an amazing experience so far!
I say all that to preface some of the fun franchises I created for that original UFFL (some of which you'll recognize):
First in the Continental League I had the:
Boston Barons (founded in 2011, previously the Toledo Tigers 1963-75 and the Toledo Bolts 1976-2010)
Montreal Royales (2011)
New York Titans (1963)
Philadelphia Steel Horses (1969, formerly the Philadelphia Kings 1963-68)
Birmingham Vanguards (1976)
Georgia Bucks (1977, formerly the Hartford Bucks 1963-64 and the Milwaukee Bucks 1965-76)
Orlando Panthers (2011)
St. Petersburg Sharks (2011)
Louisiana War Eagles (1977)
Memphis Steers (1967, formerly the Detroit Racers 1963-66)
New Orleans Pelicans (2011)
Texas Ramblers (1963)
Columbus Tigers (2011)
Milwaukee Bandits (1977)
San Jose Condors (1967, formerly the Providence Colonels 1963-67)
Wichita Wranglers (1988)
Las Vegas Firebirds (2011)
Los Angeles Bulldogs (1967, formerly the New York Knights 1963-66)
Portland Pilots (2011)
Tacoma Rangers (2011)
and in the United League I had the:
Miami Marines (2011)
New York Knights (2011)
Syracuse Cavaliers (1977)
Toronto Northlanders (2011)
Baltimore Ponies (2011)
Norfolk Admirals (2011)
Washington Commanders (2000, formerly the Washington Generals 1977 and the Norfolk Commanders 1978-99)
Chicago Outlaws (1965, formerly the Washington Outlaws 1963-64)
Louisville Blues (1989, formerly the New Haven Sounds 1973-88)
Minnesota Mustangs (2011)
St. Louis Spirits (2011)
Houston Tankers (2011)
New Mexico Thunderbirds (2002)
North Florida Renegades (1996, formerly the Miami Tropics 1977-78 and the Orlando Raiders 1979-1995)
San Antonio Wings (1977)
California Dons (1976)
Hawaiian Tropics (1983)
Tucson Tornadoes (1999)
Utah Wolves (1994)
Some of the uniforms were really quite awesome in my opinion. My absolute favorites were San Antonio, Washington, Chicago (the same as the current ones), Memphis, Raleigh, New Mexico, Texas (same as the current ones), Georgia, Louisiana, North Florida, and Minnesota. If anyone's interested in seeing them sometime, let me know!
Of course, in relation to the actual UFFL, I don't plan on introducing any of those teams in. If someone wants to start a franchise with one of those names when/if we expand or relocate a team and name them one of those, it'd really honor me. I'd even give them their jersey to use if they wanted. But I feel that my role in league creation has been fulfilled and the rest is really up to the community as a whole.
I will say that I have this notion for a totally carefree Spring minor league farm system though... with no stats and just random games...
